The Memory of Matter

#sandpaper#collage#mixedmedia

I apply discarded Sandpaper as a base for my work. This paper, which is often used by house painters to level the walls or remove rust or prepare surfaces, and the surface is interesting to me, so I collect the paper from house painters which has traces of work and change. It bears signs of use, stains, scratches and textures, which keep a silent record of everyday life. Gathering these papers and reworking them with color with soil powder, graphite and collage, I make assemblages that emphasize their past. All works are indicative of the physical act of erasure and renewal, as well as the more profound links between memory, material and daily experience. In this practice, I aim to demonstrate how neglected materials can be turned into carriers of meaning, exposing the stratified relationships between individuals, work, and time.
